F. Wartena - Jet-Net: The analysis of the current educational aspects
of the pre-university school system in The Netherlands leads to the observation
that an increasing number of youngsters no longer enroll in technically oriented
tertiary education. This is accompanied by a decreasing number of students that
chooses a technically focused study profile during their secondary school
education. At the same time, The Netherlands strives to become a knowledge-based
economy. This apparent mismatch is not just recognized but is a point of concern
to the government, educational institutes, and business.
In the Jet-Net (Jongeren en Technologie Netwerk Nederland) covenant industry
joins forces with the government, educational system and intermediaries to
encourage young people in scientific and technical studies by making the
technologically oriented classes more appealing and more into touch with the
world outside.
Philips is one of the main contributors to Jet-Net. In the HSA group we have
created a workshop to teach students in the age of 12-14 how to program a game
for their mobile phone. The workshop is called "Bouw je eigen game"
and gives the students during 2 hours a first encounter with software
development in a very entertaining way.
